Veneers at Shenton Park Family Dental

When you want to help your smile look its best, cosmetic veneers offer a tremendous advantage. Unlike crowns that wrap around the entire tooth, veneers only cover the front of the teeth that are visible when you smile. Typically that means just the upper front teeth but occasionally we’ll place them on the lower teeth as well.

Veneer illustrationWhy Choose Veneers?

Cosmetic veneers can instantly cover mismatched teeth or a tooth that isn’t shaped appropriately. Perhaps you have one that’s too small or peg-shaped due to the way it developed. These aesthetic porcelain restorations also cover chipped and stained enamel, improving the overall colour and alignment of those teeth entirely.

With veneers you can create straighter, whiter teeth without bleaching or braces. However, if you’re looking for an alternative to both, we might suggest a clear, removable orthodontic device such as Invisalign®. But if your teeth need a bit more help than simply addressing alignment issues, veneers are an excellent choice.

Each dental veneers candidate will need to first book a consultation to determine if they qualify. From there, we’ll discuss the options available and develop a treatment plan. When possible, we’ll also create a mock-up using an impression of your teeth and shaping wax to them to give you an idea of how they’ll look. If you have something else in mind, we can adjust the proposed model to your liking.

When you’re ready to move forward, we’ll gently prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel (similar to crown treatment). At that point we’ll take a series of impressions for our lab to create your permanent veneers. Everything from their colour, shape and alignment is considered. After we get them back from the lab, we’ll ensure that you’re happy with how they look and then cement them into place.

Who qualifies for dental veneers?

Porcelain veneers are not suitable for someone who grinds their teeth (unless you’re taking steps to stop the habit). Sometimes if teeth are excessively worn down or broken, a veneer may not be able to provide adequate protection. A crown is usually the better option.
How many will I need?

The number you need will depend on how many teeth are visible when you smile. For some people that’s just 6-8 of their upper front teeth. For someone else, it might be more than that, particularly if their smile is wide of the lower teeth are highly visible.
How much do veneers cost?

After your initial consultation, we’ll create a personalised care plan that lists the number of veneers required and any adjunctive services that may be necessary. You’ll know what the fees are and can decide at that point whether you want to move forward with treatment.
Are dental veneers reversible?

No. Getting veneers is an irreversible process. If one ever breaks off, you’ll have to have it replaced in a timely manner. Since a small amount of enamel is shaved away for the veneer to bond to your tooth, you cannot leave the tooth uncovered from that point on.
Can I whiten my veneers?

No. Veneers are designed from porcelain, similar to dental crowns. Like other dental work, they won’t respond to teeth whitening agents. It’s best to carefully select the shade you want as part of the veneer planning process. The only way to change the colour in the future is to replace them with a new set of veneers. We recommend whitening your teeth beforehand so that adjacent teeth will match your veneers as closely as possible.
