Crowns and Bridges at Shenton Park Family Dental

Our custom crowns and bridges are crafted from durable materials that strengthen and enhance your smile. Whether you’re repairing a broken tooth or replacing a missing one, we meticulously plan out a new restoration that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Dental Crowns

Illustration of dental crownCrowns are protective covers that go around the outside of a tooth. They reinforce weak or compromised teeth, protecting them against fractures during everyday use.

Depending on which tooth needs a crown and what your preferences are, we can craft your restoration from

  • Porcelain
  • Gold
  • Porcelain fused to a metal base

The porcelain options are individually matched to the colour of your natural smile, while gold is better for back teeth that experience heavy biting pressure. We’ll discuss the specific needs of your tooth to ensure your treatment lasts a long time but also looks attractive.

Dental Bridges

Bridges are a multi-tooth restoration. We use them when there’s a missing tooth that needs to be replaced. In this case, we top two abutment teeth (on either side of the missing one) with a crown and then a pontic tooth is fused between them. The missing tooth space is filled by what looks like a new tooth but it’s actually being suspended over the gums by the teeth on either side.

FAQ

Why do I need a dental crown?

Teeth that are structurally compromised, such as those with large cracks, cavities or are already heavily restored, may break apart easily from normal biting. A crown will add a layer of protection around the remaining tooth structure to protect it on a daily basis. The extra reinforcement allows you to continue eating normally.

What should I expect during crown treatment?

The crown process is normally spaced out over two appointments. You’ll come in to get the tooth ready (‘prepped’) for the crown. Then we’ll take a mould and send it to our lab. We’ll fit you with a temporary crown while the permanent one is being made. About two weeks later you’ll come back to have it seated and checked for comfort, then we’ll bond it into place permanently.

What will it look like?

Each restoration is handcrafted for optimal size and shape as it relates to that specific tooth (or teeth) in your mouth. For areas that are visible when you smile, we’ll custom match the porcelain so that the restoration isn’t noticeable to other people. We want your final crown or bridge to look as realistic as possible.

What will it feel like?

The shape and texture of your new restoration will be such that it blends right in with the other teeth in your mouth. When you’re eating or running your tongue over the area, you shouldn’t notice anything at all.

What happens if the restoration poses an aesthetic concern?

We have your crown or bridge created in a way that resembles the appearance of the teeth on either side of it. When it’s seated correctly you’ll be able to smile and eat comfortably, knowing it fits in line with your surrounding smile.
