Checkup and Clean at Shenton Park Family Dental
A healthy mouth can boost your overall wellness and limit strain to your immune system. It all starts with a great preventative care routine with our dentist and hygienist.
What to Expect at Your First Checkup
When you arrive, our receptionist will meet you at the front with a brief medical questionnaire. From there, one of our assistants will escort you back to a private room to meet with our dentist. First, we’ll examine your teeth and then order any X-rays if necessary. If possible, let us know when your most recent X-rays were taken and we can request a records transfer from your previous dentist.
Your first checkup could be a thorough exam and consultation with our dentist or it might also include a scale and clean. It’s up to you and what you need. If you’re here because of specific concerns or we diagnose any infections, we’ll create a treatment plan and coordinate those procedures for a separate date.
How Often Should I See the Dentist?
Most people benefit from a scale and clean every six months. People with little buildup and excellent oral hygiene may be able to space their visits out to once a year, whereas someone with a history of gum disease may need to be seen every 3-4 months. Regardless of the frequency of your cleans, we’ll typically space your exams to every second visit.
Professional cleans remove tartar buildup, plaque and surface stains from your teeth to promote better oral health. When there are fewer bacterial colonies in your mouth, your gum tissues and bone can better support your teeth. Throughout your clean, we’ll identify areas that may need more attention or a modified hygiene plan to help you keep your teeth healthy for years to come.
Regularly screening your mouth for symptoms of gum disease, tooth decay and conditions like oral cancer means we can intercept them sooner. Earlier treatment is typically more effective, less invasive and affordable.
If treatment is needed, how much is it going to cost?
If we diagnose any treatment needs (such as tooth decay or infections) during your exam, we’ll work up a treatment plan that outlines all of the fees associated with those services. Since we accept health funds, your overall gap should be reduced as much as possible.
Sometimes same-day interim treatment is needed after an exam if you’re seeing us about a dental emergency. Otherwise, our treatment coordinators will find a time that works for you at the end of your appointment.
You can request to see our dentist or both the dentist and hygienist. Your initial checkup is scheduled around your specific concerns and needs.
Our goal is to keep your teeth healthy for life. As part of your care, we’ll put you on a preventative care routine that includes regular scale and cleans, periodontal screenings and exams. Pending any treatment needs, we’ll monitor your oral health from visit to visit, identifying changes in your teeth and gums when applicable.
